Book Babies And The Big Pick!
Hey, all!
Happy Friday, to those who celebrate.
I have a few things to announce…
I will begin posting new comic pages next Wednesday. The schedule will be a little different going forward. Each week, I’ll be alternating between THE PATCHWORK GIRL OF OZ and THE MIGHTY YOOBAI. I’m doing this to allow for more work to be done on other projects while still moving forward with the newsletter-exclusive comics. Speaking of new projects…
As I said in the previous newsletter, 2024 is the year I push my book babies out of the nest. I’ve been sitting on a lot of material, waiting for the right time to publish it all. Well, the time has arrived. The first book series to come out is called EDISON PICKLEBERRY, and it will debut this Sunday on Kindle Vella before being published as e-books and print versions. What is Kindle Vella? Watch this short video to find out:
I’ll share more about EDISON PICKLEBERRY very soon.

UPDATE: The series is now live!

Comics I’m reading right now:
Spider-Man - Quantum Quest: The 2nd book in Mike Maihack’s charming Spidey series came out this week, and it’s just as good as the first one. And there’s one more book coming soon!
I Hate Fairyland Vol. 2 - Brett Bean is killing it as the new artist on Skottie Young’s hilarious Image Comics series. Have I said that before? Maybe. But it’s true.
Transformers - I will buy any comic that Daniel Warren Johnson draws. Even a Transformers comic. And I have ZERO interest in Transformers.
Go get ‘em!
Episode 1: Mr. Burns
On May 28th, 2020, I let two guys pick my nose to save my life.
Then, three years later, on August 25th, 2023, I let two guys do it again.
This is a true story.
Here’s how it happened…
****
I remember looking at the MRI image of the benign adenoma in my brain and joking, "It looks like Mr. Burns from that X-Files episode of The Simpsons!" My wife Kate agreed; it did resemble a doped-up, hospital gown-wearing, green-glowing Burns.
Okay… maybe it didn’t look exactly like Burnsy. But when you’re being shown the giant brain tumor sitting in your skull, you gotta laugh. The only other option is crying. And I didn’t have time for that.
It was May 20th, 2020 – the time of COVID and lockdowns – so instead of being in a doctor's office for this revelation, we had a "virtual visit" with my surgeon, Dr. Venteicher. With my iPhone mounted on a stand, Kate and I stared at the tiny screen while he showed us my MRI results.
We tried to keep up but knew we'd be Googling certain terms afterward. Terms like:
Endoscopic Endonasal Surgery
A minimally invasive technique where a thin tube called an endoscope is threaded through your nose to operate on hard-to-reach areas near the front of your brain and the top of your spine.
In other words… The Big Pick.
So, in just eight days, Kate would drive me to MHealth Fairview Hospital for this procedure; but due to Covid-related lockdowns and protocols, she couldn't visit me during my four-day stay. Needless to say, she wasn't thrilled.
Regardless of the circumstances, Mr. Burns had to go, so brain surgery it was. But how did I even find out about this uninvited guest in my head? Stay tuned for next week's episode: "I Fell Out Of A Car In Florida."
